Yet, so far the microbiome has been too complex and the science too fast moving to benefit patients in practice.

Jona has developed transformative AI technology to analyze an individual's microbiome, interpret the results, and summarize what is known today about that individual's microbiome profile based on the scientific literature. With actionable insights and recommendations, individual's can get to the root source of understanding their health, alleviate symptoms, and prevent chronic disease.

About the Role

Senior AI Engineer

Location: Remote | Full-Time

At Jona, we’re transforming how clinicians and consumers understand and optimize their gut microbiome. Our AI-powered platform decodes complex microbiome data and translates it into actionable insights—supporting better outcomes, stronger immunity and longer healthspans.

We’re looking for a Senior AI Engineer with deep expertise in machine learning, biology, and scalable systems to help us push the boundaries of personalized, preventative health. You’ll design, build and deploy AI models that transform complex microbiome and clinical datasets into precision health insights—directly shaping how individuals and clinicians make better health decisions.

What You’ll Do

• Build and Ship Predictive AI Models: Develop and optimize supervised and unsupervised learning AI models to identify microbial biomarkers, predict disease states, treatment responses and health outcomes.
• Implement Advanced Algorithms: Innovate and apply cutting-edge techniques in AI and LLMs, differential abundance analysis, network inference, multi-omics integration and deep learning architectures for time series, biological and scientific data.
• AI Leadership: Lead AI projects from conception to deployment, architecting scalable solutions and ensuring their successful integration into existing systems.
• Develop Data Pipelines & Biological Analysis Tools: Design and implement robust ETL workflows for processing large-scale microbiome sequencing data (e.g., shotgun metagenomics), ensuring quality, normalization and integration from diverse sources. Create custom tools and workflows for microbiome data preprocessing, machine learning and visualization in collaboration with researchers.
• Validate & Monitor Models: Establish rigorous validation pipelines, monitor real-world performance and mitigate model drift in production systems.
• Collaborate on Research: Partner with clinicians, scientists and academic researchers to validate insights, publish findings and stay at the forefront of microbiome and AI science.
• Scale Platform Infrastructure: Architect and maintain cloud-based systems for multi-terabyte biological datasets, containerized deployment, API integrations and real-time analytics.
• Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Build models and pipelines in compliance with HIPAA and FDA guidance for AI/ML-based medical technologies, with robust documentation.
